Requirements

ProphetCharts runs on Java version 1.5.0 or higher.

While waiting for the applet to load, please do not switch windows until you see the security dialog and accept Prophet's security certificate.

Prophet software uses port 1127 for streaming quote data, and port 80 for everything else. Virus- and spyware-protection software may incorrectly flag this as malicious activity. You must alter the virus and spyware-protection settings to permit Prophet software to use these ports. Otherwise, Prophet software may malfunction.

Enabling Java caching:

To reduce the starting time for ProphetCharts, you can set Java to automatically keep a copy of the applet in its local cache on your hard disk. The local copy will be opened rather than fetching it from the internet.

  1. On Windows, open Start -> Settings -> Control Panels -> Java. On Macintosh, open /Applications/Utilities/Java/Java J2SE5.0/Java Preferences.
  2. Click the General Tab.
  3. Click Settings in the Temporary Internet Files section (bottom). The Temporary File Settings dialog appears.
  4. Choose Unlimited for the amount of disk space to use.
  5. Click View Applets. The Java Applet Cache Viewer launches.
  6. In the lower-left corner, check Enable Caching, if it is not already checked.
  7. On Windows, click OK to dismiss the Java Applet Cache Viewer On Macintosh, choose Quit Java Cache Viewer from the Java Cache Viewer menu.
  8. Click OK to dismiss the Temporary File Settings.
  9. On Windows, click OK to dismiss the Java Control Panel. On Macintosh, click Save, then choose Quit Java Preferences from the Java Preferences menu.

Clearing the Java cache:

If you are having problems with ProphetCharts, you may be instructed to clear the Java cache and try running ProphetCharts again.

  1. Quit all web browsers
  2. On Windows, open Start -> Settings -> Control Panels -> Java. On Macintosh, open /Applications/Utilities/Java/Java J2SE5.0/Java Preferences
  3. Click the General Tab.
  4. Click Delete Files.
  5. Check all three checkboxes, if they are not already checked
  6. Click OK. On Windows, click OK to dismiss the Java Control Panel. On Macintosh, click Save, then choose Quit Java Preferences from the Java Preferences menu.

Using ProphetCharts

Most user interface items in ProphetCharts feature tooltips. To see the tooltip for a button or icon, hover the mouse pointer over the item until a small window appears. Use the tooltips to find out what user interface items do. Move the mouse to make the tooltip disappear.

Context menus are available throughout the UI by right-clicking. If you're a Macintosh user, you can get the context menu by holding down the control key and then pressing the mouse button.

Keyboard shortcuts are available for many menu items and are displayed in the menus.

Modules

The left-hand panel has been reorganized into collapsible modules.

  • Click on the module's header to display its contents. By default, only one module may be open at a time.
  • If you want to look at more than one module at the same time, click on the small circle in the module header to pin the module. The module will then remain open as you open other modules.
  • Click the pin again to permit the module to be closed automatically when looking at other modules.

You can apply studies and symbols to your chart by double-clicking or dragging them from the left-hand panel to the chart.

Symbol Lookup

Symbol Search, Lookup Future, and Lookup Option have been moved to the new "Symbol" menu. The new Options Wizard features a greatly improved user interface that allows you to lookup option symbols by price and expiry quickly and easily.

Watch Lists

From the Watch Lists module (located in the left panel of the applet), you can move a symbol from one watch list to another by dragging. To copy symbols between watch lists, press and hold the Control key while dragging the symbol you wish to copy. You can also drag symbols from the Chart Toppers module to a watch list.

Studies and Comparisons

Each chart pane can have up to two Y- axes. For instance, if two studies are superimposed in a lower pane, the first study will display its range on the right axis, and the second study will display its range on the left axis. The axis upon which a study displays its range is indicated in the study editor by an arrow.

If a third study is superimposed, the axes are removed. Study values continue to be displayed interactively at the top of the chart pane. Due to potential anchor ambiguity, drawings are not allowed on study panes containing multiple indicators.

New Feature: you can resize study panes by moving the mouse over the value-tracker until the cursor changes to up/down arrow and a thick horizontal line appears. Drag the bar using the mouse to resize the pane.

There are three ways to do a comparison

  • The familiar Comparisons dialog (for same-axis percentage comparisons)
  • The new Left Price Scale Comparison feature. This is available in the Chart Settings menu -> Left Scale -> Add Left Price Scale chart.
  • Entering multiple (comma or space-separated) symbols in the symbols field

If you compare two symbols with different trading hours, the chart reflects this clearly in intraday charts.

You can change the vertical ordering of chart panes in the Apply Studies dialog by dragging them to a new position. You can resize panes on the chart by dragging the separator between panes.

There are several different ways to add studies

  • Double-click on the study name in the Technical Studies module. This will clear all studies and apply the study clicked on.
  • Double-click on the study name in the Studies list of the Apply Studies dialog. This will create a new study pane and put the study in it. Other studies will not be cleared.
  • In the Apply Studies dialog, drag the study from the Studies list into a pane in the right hand side. This is how you can add mutiple studies to your chart.

You can edit the study parameters, line colors, and line styles, by double-clicking the study name in the right hand side of the Apply Studies dialog.

Custom Intraday Frequency

On intraday charts, to apply a sampling frequency that is not listed in the frequency dropdown menu, overtype the displayed frequency and press Enter. For example, entering 6 or 6m will set the frequency to 6 minutes; entering 3h will set it to 3 hours.

You can save chart styles with the custom frequencies that you use often.

Tools

ProphetCharts displays drawing tools in toolbar below the chart. Click a tool button to choose it.

You may create a drawing either by dragging, or by using individual clicks to anchor each drawing point.

You can cancel a mouse drawing in progress by:

  • Pressing the ESC (escape) key on the keyboard
  • Right-clicking on the graph
  • Choosing another tool

To view a tool's option menu, do one of the following:

  • Right-click the tool's icon
  • Click the arrow in the lower-right corner of the tool's icon
  • Press and hold anywhere on the tool's icon

To hide the tool bar: Choose Hide Tools from the Drawing Tools menu This setting is saved with a chart style.

The tools from left to right:

  • Pointer Tool
  • Resize Graph Tool
  • Trendline
  • Channel
  • Price (horizontal) line
  • Text Note
  • Oval Highlight
  • Rectangle Highlight
  • Fibonacci Retracement
  • Fibonacci Time Lines
  • Fibonacci Arcs
  • Fibonacci Fans

Pointer Tool
Use the options on this tool to determine whether horizontal, vertical, crosshair, or no guide lines are displayed beneath the pointer on the chart.

Resize Graph Tool
After clicking on this tool, the chart goes into a special mode to where you can adjust the space above, beneath, and to the right of the graph. Drag on the handles (white squares) and the gray areas around the chart to adjust the space. Press the escape key or click in the central non-shaded area of the chart when you are satisfied.

Drawing Tools

  • To make a drawing, click on the tool's icon, then drag or click to anchor the drawing's points. Press the Escape key, or select another tool to cancel.
  • To display OHLC values while drawing a trendline, hold down the CTRL key.
  • Shift Zooming. When a drawing tool is selected, holding down the shift key changes to a Zoom-in tool. Click to zoom in about a point. Drag horizontally to zoom into the selected region. Double-click to unzoom fully. Holding down Shift plus Alt keys changes to a Zoom-out tool. Click to zoom out incrementally.
  • Drawing Tool menu -> Snap To OHLC, Choose this to make drawings "snap to" OHLC values.
  • To adjust the size, location, or orientation of a drawing you've already made, right-click on it and choose "Move" from the context menu or simply double-click the drawing. Squares called handles will appear on the drawing. Move the mouse over these handles until it turns into a hand, then press and drag the mouse to move the points. You can also drag on the drawing itself to move the entire drawing. Hit the escape key or click anywhere on the chart when you are satisfied.
  • There is now both a Rectangle tool and Oval highlight tool. To specify the color, outline weight, outline and fill opacity of the tool, click the triangle in the lower-right corner of the tool button, then select Modify Style/Color from the menu. After the rectangle or oval has been drawn, you can make further changes from its context menu.
  • You can specify several attributes of Fibonacci drawings (for example: line color and opacity). Choose Customize Fibonacci from the tool's context menu.
  • You can choose to show Fibonacci Retracement prices in addition to percents. Each Fibonacci Retracement drawing can be customized independently. Right-click on a Fibonacci Retracement, and choose "Customize Fibonacci..." from its context menu.
  • The Text Note tool now offers the choice of Font, Size, Color and Opacity. Choose Change Font/Color from the tool's context menu.
  • The Trendline and Channel tools have an Extend option, enabling you to extend lines indefinitely regardless of whether endpoints are in the expanded area.
  • You can set a preference to automatically return to the pointer tool after drawing. To temporarily reverse this preference, press the shift key when selecting a drawing tool.

Customizable Appearance

You can alter the appearance of ProphetCharts to suit your preference.

  • Choose the font size in the "Other" (rightmost) menu. Medium and Large font sizes are best used on detached charts with large monitors. The small font size is recommended for printed charts.
  • Choose the color theme affecting the background, grid and bar colors. The choices are Classic, Cream, Silver, and Dark. Make your selection in the Theme submenu of the Other menu.
  • Select a study color scheme . Choose from Bright, Earth, aor Soift in the Study Colors submenu of the Other menu.
  • Change the guide line opacity in the Preferences (available in the Chart Settings menu). An opacity of 1 is the most visible.
  • Hide modules that you don't use often. There are checkboxes for each module in the Preferences.

For Macintosh Users

  • We recommend using the latest Java VM from Apple.
  • When editing text anywhere in ProphetCharts, use Ctrl-X, Ctrl-C, and Ctrl-V instead of Command-X, Command-C, and Command-V for cut, copy, and paste.
  • On Safari, unexpected results may occur if you switch tabs and return.
  • Omniweb and Firefox appear to work but have not been fully tested.
  • ProphetCharts may periodically flash when viewed on the web page. Until this is fixed, the workaround is to run the applet in its own window (click the Detach button). This may happen less often using the Firefox 1.5 browser (free download from http://www.mozilla.com/Firefox/).
  • The first time that Print Chart is selected in a session, the Print dialog may take an unusually long time to appear. This is a Java problem.
  • On the new Intel Macs, performance with the Firefox browser may be unacceptable. Use Safari instead.

Tips For JavaCharts Classic Users

Trendline drawing is not enabled by default, since some users constantly had to delete unintentionally-created trendlines. You can create trendlines using the trendline tool below the chart. To display OHLC values while drawing a trendline, hold down the CTRL key.

After placing a drawing, the pointer tool is automatically reselected. If you want to make multiple sequential drawings, hold the shift key down when initially choosing the drawing tool. If you would prefer to permanently disable automatic pointer re-selection, choose Preferences in the Chart Settings menu, then deselect "Revert to Pointer after drawing".

To change the pointer guide style (vertical line, horizontal line, both, or none):

  • Make a selection from Drawing Tools -> Pointer Guides
  • Right-Click the Pointer Tool and choose a style

Expand chart no longer has a checkbox or a menu item. Instead, there is a Resize Graph tool that allows you to adjust the space interactively. This is the second icon from the left on the toolbar. Click on this tool, after the instruction disappears (click on it to dismiss it immediately), drag on the white handles or the gray areas surrounding the chart to adjust the amount of empty space. The handle for right-hand expansion is located in the center of the right edge of the chart. Drag this to the left to create empty space on the right-hand side of the chart. When you are satisfied, press the escape key, or click in the central non-shaded area of the chart.
